About this word unscrambler
Stuck on a scramble? A word unscrambler takes a jumble of letters and shows every real word that can be made from them. Enter your letters and this tool lists the results from the longest words down to the shortest, with the Scrabble point value of each one beside it.
It is useful for jumble puzzles, newspaper word scrambles, spelling games with children, and any game where you hold a set of letters and need to find a play.
How to use it
- Enter the scrambled letters in the box (up to 15). Use ? for a blank or an unknown letter.
- Choose a minimum word length if you do not want very short words in the results.
- Press “Unscramble”. Results are grouped by length, longest first.
- The small number next to each word is its Scrabble letter-score total (blank tiles count as zero).
Unscrambling words step by step
The unscrambler compares your letters with each word in its list. A word qualifies if you have enough copies of every letter it needs. If you entered blank tiles (?), each blank can stand in for one missing letter. Results are then grouped by word length so the most impressive answer, often the full-length word, is at the top.
For example, the letters T-N-O-S-E-H include the full-length answer “honest” and “ethos”, shorter words such as “stone”, “notes”, “tone”, “hen” and “net”, and dozens more. Seeing all of them at once is faster than trying arrangements by hand.
Strategies for scrambles and jumbles
When unscrambling by hand, start by splitting the letters into likely prefixes and suffixes (re-, un-, -ing, -ed, -tion). Group consonant clusters that commonly appear together (th, ch, st, tr, br) and look for the vowels that will separate them. Many scrambles hide a word that is simply a longer cousin of a short word you can already see, such as “stone” inside “stoned” or “tones”.
If the puzzle gives a theme or a clue, filter the results mentally by meaning; if it gives the number of letters, use the group for that length. This tool lets you set a minimum length so you can hide short words and focus on plausible answers.
About the word list and scores
Words come from a broad English list of lower-case dictionary words and their regular inflections, held on this site and searched in your browser. Scrabble points use the standard English letter values (for example Q and Z are 10, J and X are 8, and E is 1) and do not include bonus squares. If you need the best-scoring play with starts-with and ends-with filters, use the Scrabble Word Finder.
Because no single list matches every game, a rare word accepted by one game may be missing here, and a very unusual entry may appear that another game rejects. Treat the results as strong suggestions and confirm borderline plays with your game’s own dictionary.
Frequently asked questions
How many letters can I unscramble?
Up to 15 letters, including blanks. That covers a standard 7-tile Scrabble rack, a Words With Friends rack, and most newspaper jumbles.
Does it work with blank tiles?
Yes. Type ? for each blank or unknown letter. A blank can stand in for any letter and scores zero points.
Why is a word I know missing?
The word list is a general-purpose English list. Very new words, slang, specialist terms, proper nouns and some rare game-only words may not be included.
Can I unscramble a whole sentence?
No. The tool unscrambles one set of letters into single words. Remove spaces and punctuation, and enter one scrambled word at a time.
What do the numbers beside the words mean?
They are the Scrabble tile values added together, using the standard English distribution. Blank tiles count as 0, and bonus squares are not included.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes. It is free, needs no account, and runs in your browser.
