Lorem ipsum is placeholder text that designers and developers use to fill a layout before the real copy exists. Choose how many paragraphs, sentences or words you need, decide whether to begin with the traditional “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” opening, and copy the result straight into your mock-up, template or test data.

Real content distracts from layout. If a mock-up contains readable sentences, reviewers start editing the wording instead of judging typography, spacing and hierarchy. Lorem ipsum has a roughly natural distribution of word and letter lengths, so it fills space like real English text but is not meant to be read. It lets you test how headings wrap, how long paragraphs look in a column, and how a design copes with more or less text.

Placeholder text is only for work in progress. Publish pages with real, useful content, since search engines and visitors both expect it, and unfinished pages with filler text can look unprofessional or hurt rankings.

The passage is derived from “De finibus bonorum et malorum”, a Latin work on ethics written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC. The standard filler text is a scrambled and altered excerpt of that work, so most of its words are not meaningful Latin sentences. It became standard in typesetting through sample sheets for transfer lettering in the 20th century and later through desktop publishing software.

This generator uses a bank of Lorem-style words and builds new sentences and paragraphs at random, so each click produces fresh text of a believable rhythm. The only fixed text is the optional classic opening sentence.

Pick the unit that matches your need. Paragraphs suit article bodies and cards, sentences suit captions and teasers, and words suit headings, buttons and test fields where you need an exact length. Generate a few different amounts to stress-test your layout with short, typical and very long content.
